safety position by obtaining C.J. Gardner-Johnson

The Houston Texans appear to be busy this offseason and could further tailor their roster. Safety Jalen Pitre is potentially the next Texan on the trading block at the age of 25.

The Texans advanced their safety position by obtaining C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a sixth-round pick in 2026 from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Kenyon Green and a fifth-round pick in 2026.

Houston’s deal improves their secondary as they also have second-year safety Calen Bullock.

Bullock’s performance during his rookie season was quite notable, having recorded 54 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 11 passes defended.

In a proposed trade, they suggest to have Gardner-Johnson and Bullock as their starting safeties, with Pitre and a mid-round pick going to the Vikings for a second-rounder.

That would depend on how much the Texans believe in Bullock, because Pitre has been vital to their defense.

Defensive Rookie of the Year voting for his first season saw Pitre placed fifth, later becoming a top contender for the best defensive player the team has in the first three seasons.

While only playing 12 games in the 2024-25 season, Pitre was able to achieve a total of 65 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, and 2 quarterback hits.Moving him would likely come with a challenge, but if there is no substantive reasoning to believe that a long-term contract will get done, then a trade in his last year becomes sensible in terms of value.

He still is one of the most productive defensive players Pitre possesses and if the Texans choose to keep him, that will solidify one of the top three safety positions in the league. Either way the deal would give Houston another high draft choice to address a more pressing positional need.
